John DeLong collects water samples from Wildwood Lake northwest of Lincoln. DeLong published the first study investigating and demonstrating the effects of “virovory” – the phenomenon of Halteria eating infectious chloroviruses in an aquatic habitat. The experiments showed, for the first time, that a virus-only diet can fuel physiological growth and even population growth of an organism. Photo used for 2022-2023 Annual Report on Research at Nebraska. August 3, 2023. Photo by Craig Chandler/ University Communication.
